Zune for Mac

ZunePod

A while ago woot.com had a deal on refurbished Zunes. I got me a 30 GB white one and people were like “What in the hells man? You have a Mac!”

Right they were, I do have a mac. But it was 30Gbs of sweet mp3 storage for a hundred bucks! Who could pass that up? (if I read a single comment that says “I would” I swear…)

So what do I think? Has it been worth it? Read on if you are so brave.

Zune on Mac

Or a Mac on Zune, or two Zunes on a Mac with some iPods watching. Sorry, had to get that out of the way. Right, so using my Zune on my Macbook pro has been interesting. Mainly because there is no software for Macs and no hardware support for Macs. That left me two options for syncing it. Bootcamp or Parallels.

Paralelles

Parallels to the rescue

I couldn’t very well use boot camp because windows doesn’t know how to read Mac partitions. For the record the partitions used in Tiger and Leopard are way beyond those used in windows. Seriously, indexed file system.

As a result Windows wouldn’t be able to read my music collection or any of my videos. So I loaded up Parallels and then setup my Music folder as a network share. Not a network drive mind you because the Zune software doesn’t support network drives (WTF?!) but it works as a shared folder.

It then took extra a extra long time to download my library. It’s like 22 GBs so I guess I can understand that. Plus it has to go through a virtual machine and that certainly doesn’t help the thing go any faster.

Connecting a zune to a mac

The Software

Even after the update the software isn’t all that impressive. I want to merge a few albums that are labeled incorrectly, so I should be able to drag them onto each other right? Sort of, do so and the software gives a nice message “Are you sure you want to merge these albums?” the answer is yes so I hit yes and then…nothing happens. So..ok, management is a pain but then again it is on iTunes too. The particular problem probably has to do with the fact that it’s a network drive or something but it still shouldn’t happen. It might work better if I created a seperate partition for all my media and then shared accessed that directly from a windows boot.

Zune on a mac takes a long time

Because there is no mac software

I don’t bother syncing my Zune very much, it takes so long to boot into windows and then, hey, Im using windows and that could discourage anybody. Lets move on from that obvious issue and talk about some features

iPod Video vs Zune

The Zune is better because

  • Wide screen video is awesome compared to the iPod Video
  • Easy to change the feel of the zune, select different backgrounds on the quick
  • Listen to the radio
  • Sync wirelessly! (Yes I have gotten it to work under parallels. If you need help figuring that out just leave a comment.
  • Non-scratch finish
  • Wirelessly share songs with other zunes* (I’ve never actually met another person with a zune so that hasn’t mattered yet)
  • Price: Mine was 100 bucks

The iPod Video is better because

  • More compatible
  • Thinner than my Zune (new Zune’s excluded)
  • Click wheel is nice
  • More expensive

The conclusion

I really like my Zune and when I see someone’s iPod video I feel like I have a superior product even if I have to do a lot of work to get the thing syncing properly on my Mac. I don’t have to sync it very much anyway so it’s not a big big deal. Sure the software sucks too but the Zune is nice to actually use. Watching a movie on an airplane is actually doable with a zune because the screen is nice and big.

Bonus: Zune Wishlist

I may like the Zune right now but there are some features that I would really like added

  • Accelerometer: If I turn the screen I want my video and options and pictures to all turn with it
  • Some Mac software: I know Microsoft thinks people with Macs won’t ever buy a Zune but that is obviously not true because look at me. I think a lot of people won’t buy a Zune simply because there isn’t any OS X support for it.
  • Did I mention software for the Mac? Yeah, make it a universal binary too because if you try to write to my home directory…so help me..
  • Access to Content: This is a long shot but I sure would like to be able to just drop mp3s onto the Zune just like I would a usb drive. I know no one wants to enable that because they think everyone will steal mp3s. Let me make this more clear though: No Pirate has ever even been slowed down by silly DRM built into music players. The only person you’re hurting is the consumer who doesn’t no how to bypass your silly anti-copying measures.. Let me repeat that: Complicating the music transfer process so that I can’t easily backup mp3s to multiple computers only stops consumers, not pirates.

    That’s all.

Just cheated mac by downloading Zune using my virtual Windows 7 machine in VMWare Fusion. :-p no noticeable performance lag so far.

OMG! Who ever started this web site, THANK YOU! A MILLION TIMES! I HATE AT&T EVEN MORE! ...didn't think that was possible! I have the same situation happening, could NOT figure out how to get Zune working! ATT told me, "no problem", well, HUGE PROBLEM! It DOES NOT work with my Mac!... And I'm NOT doing all the parallels and whatever up there! I'm taking this phone back (4 months now) and telling them to shove it, you know where! THANK YOU, TY, TY! so glad I finally just googled it! THIEVES! So sick of it all!

I, too, love my Zune & own a Mac. UGH. Fortunately, my husband has a PC & I can sync on his computer. It's an annoyance that I can't sync on my Mac tho.
C'mon Mac, get with the program!!!

I am a longtime Zune user and newer iMac owner. I love my Zune and do not want to have to switch to a iPod. However, when I was on my old PC with windows the Zune program was so easy to use, but since the switch the programs crashes and takes forever to sync (parallels is an awful program). I hope they break down and release a mac friendly program for the Zune, because i really do think that the player is superior to an iPod.

Another reason why Macs suck, despite better performance and build quality: They're nazi about the software, etc you're allowed to use.

I'm speaking as a Mac owner, too. If I could get a great windows PC with Mac quality, I would do it.

I also have a Zune, a macbook pro, and an Imac: BUT, I had to keep my Vista laptop to keep downloading to my Zune. Bummer! Yes, if I start with my macbook, I have to buy an mp3, burn it to a CD, use the Vista laptop to burn it to my Zune. Lot of trouble, but I won't give up 120gb for less than $200 to buy an Ipod with no radio (my granddaughter has one) for the cost of my first born and two arms and a leg! Lots of trouble, but I can live with the inconvenience rather than being held hostage by Apple's DRM crap.

I just got a new macbook pro. I wonder what I will be doing with my zune. I'm not too computer savvy, so this will be an interesting journey.

hey Dan,
I found a Zune 120GB on the bus the other day...What will I need to make it work with my old Mac G4???
I have no sync adapter and of course the application program that comes with...What virtual PC and windows operating system compatible with my Mac can I get for free...and where can I get a copy of the Zune application???
Thanks,
Bruno

oooooorrr now heres a thought , stay with me for a second, you couuuuld turn the zune you found to the bue station you know the right thing

Ain't it the truth! Why would you keep someone else's property like that? Such a raunchy, low-life maneuver. Instead of trying to find out how you can use it, you should be exerting the same effort to locate the owner. I have had to track my Ipod down (my granddaughters) which was stolen by a football player on the school team: I got him suspended for 10 days for stealing my product. Last year, I hunted down a thief who stole my $400 Droid X. She met me at Walmart with the stolen item after I scared her to death with the consequences of keeping it. She had actually robbed a retail store and took my Droid that was sitting on the counter being serviced. And, the store was held liable for their negligence. I don't play. And, you should be ashamed.

I hope you contacted the bus company & tried to find the owner.  If not, may the same misfortune happen to you. What goes around comes around.

look, i have been up for 12 hour trying to figure this out. I have had my zune for 4 years and i got the mac for free with a college scholarship. i just want to be able to add more music, thats all!

My primary computer is a Mac and I also have a Zune 120 (and I plan to get a Zune HD 32 or 64 gig in the future). I have struggled and found a good solution. I have two computers, my Macbook, and my Windows desktop, I have simply used the desktop for all my music and videos, and for when I want to take the files with me, I simply unplug the 320 gig portable hard drive I have them on and go on my merry way.

Vary good post, I too am in the same boat. Unfortunately i dont know crap about Boot Camp or Parallels to be able to make this work, nor do i have any more money to buy such programs... i HAD a PC and a Zune, and an iPod... my PC crapped out for the 4th time so i shot it with some 12g. slugs and .308 rounds till it was only chunks... now i have a MacBook Pro (amazing)! but for the time im screwed

Instead of buying one of those apps you can download VirtualBox for free. http://www.virtualbox.org/

Try it out and let me know where you get stuck in my instructions.

I am a 2009 MacBook Pro owner and I HATE my iPod (original) ... granted I only paid 20 bucks for it... but I needed it because my original iPod was too small. I recently bought a NEW older model Zune(Ford Warriors In Pink...) I support Breast Cancer Research and I drive a Mustang and LOVE Fords.... so it was perfect... plus I LOVED my friends' Zunes.... so owning a Mac didn't stop me... and my best friend is an Apple junkie so he helped me even though it was kinda against his Apple ethics... haha

i have the new macbook and i already had a zune 80gb, i recently broke my gateway destop, and now that i have a mac, i cant connect my zune, i read ur story, and i am still confused
PLEASE HELP ME!!!

I have to say that I own both a zune 80 gb and Ipod 80 GB and the Zune is the one I use everyday. Though I cant sync it with my mac I have no problem going to my brothers house and syncing with his computer for like 30 minutes. My Ipod has been collecting dust. Its just not as user friendly as the zune.

ZUNE is the shit!! I had the 30GB then later purchased the 8GB. Now i own the 120GB.

Its way better than IPOD easier to use on any laptop other than IMAC.

The best way to handle movie ripping is with http://handbrake.fr/ Its much simpler and totally free.

Nice guide, I found a step by step guide about how to convert DVD and video to mp4 video for Zune on mac, share it here
http://www.mac-dvd.com/mac-guide/how-to-rip-copyri...

to help!!
You can use parallels. Here are two tutorials:

http://www.zune-online.com/news/zune/zune-on-mac-u...

Zune’s native file compatible formats are:

JPEG for images;
WMV is supported on all models, and MPEG-4 and H.264 are supported for video on all models except the Zune 30. The MPEG-4 and H.264 formats are automatically transcoded to WMV by the Zune software when syncing to a Zune 30;
MP3, AAC (.m4a), Zune Marketplace (restricted and DRM free), WMA Pro (2-channel), WMA Standard, WMA lossless for audio.

you need to convert the video first.

The major problem is that MS and Apple don't give consumers the benefit of the doubt. They think if you own a Mac you've sold your soul to Apple and any advertising or "bones" thrown your way are wasted effort. PC likewise.

What they need to understand is that (MOST) consumers go with the better product. The more features and dynamic compatabilities you can cram in a device the better off you're going to be. If MS put in features like portable harddrive capabilities and non-proprietary OS compatabilities they would have me, and many others sold.

I just can't justify paying that much for something that's restricted to MP3 and Video playback, especially when further restrictions are placed on where and how I can use the device.

Great post!

i am getting a zune for christmas but i have a mac computer. i dont know how/ where to get the parallels program, and i also dont know how to get my zune to work on a mac computer. PLEASE HELP

To the person a few above. There are many UMS compatible ( awesome) Mp3 players that do NOT use DRM.
Try:
Cowon ( some of the best sound ever! and their new s9 is gonna be greeeaaat! iaudiophile.com)
Iriver
Creative ( not as good)
Sansa ( the clip is great! anythingbutipod.com)
and any from MP4nation.net ( They are VERRRY good, and whip Ipod's butt- don't last as long though- average 3 years of PMP goodness)

qd: You have to use virtualization at this point. Your options are
Virtual Box (Free)
Parallels (Not free)
and VMware Fusion (Very not free)

Jesse: I've actually switched from parallels to vmware fusion and prefer it. Vmware fusion is the best virtual desktop available.

Same Idea Here just using VMware Fusion. I haven't tried parallels yet. Any benefits I'm missing out on?

how do you get it to work on mac os

ehhhhhhhk.so, i just got a RAD old 12" powerbook. it is the best laptop EVER. And yesterday i picked up a sweet 30gb Zune for $50. sweet right? i love the Zune, but AHCKKKKFRICK!!!WHY! DO! THEY! HAVE!TO! MAKE music so hard to enjoy?
Is my frustration coming through? Screw Apple AND Microsoft! Bill Gates: Go stuff your zune where the sun dont shine!!!
Steve Jobs: Go stuff an ipod where it counts!!!
Someone smart: Please make a solid mp3 player similiar to said major players but W/0 all the pain in the brain DRM BS.just like a usb thumb drive. Is that so hard? really?

Thats Funny! So glad I read this before I lost my mind, which I was close too! I wish I could invent the sh*t, I would. Then I'd be a biliionaire!

Put a sleep timer on the Zune and I'm in!

They have em for the HD. Hah

Justin, yeah, I left a b tag open. What do you mean fanboy? Do I like the zune too much?

i hear ya. you know, you wouldn't make that bad of a fanboy...

p.s. you forgot a closing bold tag or two... it's effing up the rest of the page

okay something happend and my comment didn't come through all the way. sorry.

geez dan. way to go confusing me on whether i should get an ipod or a zune. now i'm going to have to do more research on the zune.

ack! this sucks. maybe is should just spend the 40 bucks and get another cd player instead of trying to be a techie type and own a cool music program thingy. and yes the ipod and zune :(

but overall good post. thanks.

Nice one. Mac owners who also have a zune are aplenty I am sure. (you know hundreds of mac owners bought them on that woot deal too) -- this is a solid little post about your experience-- I only wish I had an iPod OR a Zune... or anything.
